Indian Celebrities Turning Over a New Leaf

New Delhi [India], October 5: It is becoming increasingly common for celebrities, public figures and influencers to use their platforms to raise awareness about issues they care about. One such cause that public figures around the world are supporting is farmed-animal protection.

Billie Eilish, Joaquin Phoenix and Ariana Grande are among prominent celebrities who have publicly embraced vegan or plant-based lifestyles, while Leonardo DiCaprio and Bill Gates have invested in plant-based meat alternatives.

Amruta Ubale, Executive Director at Animal Equality, says, “Every day, we make choices that affect the lives of millions of animals, often without realising it. Public figures have the unique power to make people pause, ponder on these choices and discover a kinder alternative. By choosing plant-powered foods, we can save animals, reduce our impact on the planet and nourish our own health. Our 21-day Plant-powered Challenge is an invitation to take that first step—and discover how one simple change can create a much bigger impact.”

Animal Equality, an animal protection organisation based in Pune launched a ‘21 days Plant-powered challenge’ initiative in which public figures take the plant-powered challenge and share their experience.

Anoushka Chauhan, actor and model says, “Despite growing up in a meat eating environment in the mountains, I turned vegetarian for spiritual reasons and now after learning about exploitation of animals for dairy, I turned vegan.”

Alessandra Merediz, actress and yoga teacher says, “I turned vegan for the animals and for health. My PCOS was reversed after following a plant-based diet. For anyone trying to turn vegan, I would say do it gradually. ”

Tanishq Singh, model and actor says, “After turning vegan my mood, skin, and energy levels got so much better. And I just feel so tranquil from within.”

Meeloni Visaria, yoga, strength and flexibility trainer says, “Yoga and nutrition has changed the way I look at food. Most of us are lactose intolerant and we have normalised feeling bloated, tired, etc. Hormones found in dairy products are messing with our body’s hormones, creating inflammation and research says that gut thrives on plant-based foods.”

Plant-based diet and health

The evidence for well-planned plant-based diets continues to grow. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ 2025 position paper states that appropriately planned vegetarian and vegan diets can be nutritionally adequate and offer long-term health benefits.

A 2024 review of 21 systematic reviews found that vegetarian and vegan dietary patterns were associated with a 15% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and an 8% lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality.

Plant-based diet and the environment

The environmental impact of food choices is significant. According to the FAO’s latest data, agrifood systems produced around 16.5 billion tonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions in 2023, with livestock accounting for approximately 4.3 billion tonnes.

The IPCC has identified diets higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-source foods as a major opportunity for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and creating more sustainable food systems.

Plant-based diet saves animals

Animals raised for food face confinement, painful procedures, separation from their mothers and cruel handling. Choosing plant-based foods reduces demand for animal products and sparea animals from being raised and killed for food.

Animal Equality’s 21-day Plant-powered Challenge invites people to take a simple first step towards a kinder, healthier and more sustainable way of eating—and discover the difference that their choices can make. Visit loveveg.in to learn more.
