The Indian Government Approves Caste Census: A Step Towards Social Justice

New Delhi [India], April 30: In a significant development, the Government of India has authorised the collection of caste data in the forthcoming national census. This decision was ratified during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This initiative serves as a definitive reflection of the government’s commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and the empowerment of all socio-economically disadvantaged classes.

With the inclusion of caste calculations, the census will now capture the complete social fabric of India, providing critical data for policymaking and fair distribution of resources.

While the opposition and its allies were hesitant about the caste census during their time in office and politicized the issue, the BJP government has now firmly supported transparency and equality.

“This decision fosters inclusion, acknowledges diversity, and enables those left behind,” a senior functionary said after the CCPA meeting.

The caste census is likely to influence targeted welfare policy, allowing governments to undertake evidence-based schemes for disadvantaged groups.

With a socially equitable vision at its core, the move is a strategic turning point in India’s administrative and development planning. The move is pre-census cycle, providing sufficient lead time to be included in the overall data collection mechanism. Analysts view this step as revolutionary, having the capability to redefine India’s social policy matrix for generations to come.

In promoting caste-based counting (caste census), the current regime reaffirms its commitment to “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas,” once again aligning itself with the rights and dignity of all classes.
